The talk „How accurate are current tools and models for estimating software energy consumption?“ by Prof. Dr. Andreas Brunnert received the Highly Commended Talk Award of the Swiss Physical Society at SC4RC 2026 at CERN.

What it was about

Software does not consume energy itself – the hardware it runs on does. That is precisely where the difficulty starts: consumption has to be attributed to the software, and a growing number of tools and models has appeared in recent years, each operating at a different level.

The talk presents experimental results on the accuracy of these approaches, measured at container, process and transaction level.

About the conference

SC4RC – the Sustainability Conference for Responsible Research Computing – took place from May 4th to 8th, 2026 at CERN in Geneva. It brings together data-intensive disciplines to share experience on estimating and monitoring the environmental impact and energy use of computing. The contribution was given online on May 6th, 2026 in the Main Auditorium.
